Here's how I work

Updated: Dec 17

After starting my consultancy I thought it would be good to give you some info about how I work.

I’m based in north Gloucestershire but can travel pretty much anywhere in the UK (subject to expenses 😊) – I live on the train line to Paddington, so that’s handy for central London; and I equally travel by car a lot of the time. I find driving gives me a chance to reflect, and listen to podcasts etc.

I’ve worked with many organisations where face to face was the name of the game, and I do love seeing things in person – like how products are made in a factory, I find it fascinating. Meeting up with people to get to know them is really beneficial. It isn’t until you see things for yourself that you can easily tailor solutions for them. I have always been an advocate of this in my HR career: in telecoms going out in the van for the day with the installers; shadowing shifts with paramedic crews at the ambulance service; or doing gembas in the coffee factory etc.

I’m a big advocate of agile working, I can do a lot from home. But when you work freelance that can be a bit lonely at times; so I have my dog to keep me company. That said, I am incredibly diligent so get a lot of good quality work done from home.

I tend to find delivering training courses work much better face to face – seeing the interaction, doing break out groups and getting challenge face to face. So often it is at the end of a course that someone will come to you with their biggest dilemma – a bit like at the Doctor’s when you talk about an ailment, but really what you wanted to talk about, you blurt out at the end. That is the real problem, and I love helping and coaching people to solve things. I have delivered many training courses virtually as well, but I do find you can have a lack of full participation – it’s so easy for people to get distracted with something that pops up on the screen.

I’ve recently refreshed my Mental Health First Aider qualification so I would always be able to speak to someone if they needed a listening ear. Clearly that is not about me being an HR Consultant, that’s because I genuinely don’t want people to suffer in silence.

My specialisms as an HR Consultant are:

> Expertise in running reorganisations and change projects – from redundancies to TUPE, to property moves

> If you need someone unbiased for a people case I have extensive employee relations experience

> Practical leadership training to help empower your leaders and aspiring leaders

> Perhaps your HR department is suffering a gap? I can also support here as a trusted business partner

> Well-being and diversity, equity and inclusion strategies - I am hugely passionate in this area to help you build plans relevant to your business

So there you go, hopefully that gives you an idea of how I work. Any questions please do book a 15 minute call and we can chat further.
